Letterboxed Dubbing?
Hey guys –
Long-time Avid editor (since ’92), long-time Mac guy (’86), but new to FCP and HVX.
Under deadline pressure, I am trying to import letterboxed 4:3 footage from a shoot we did last week in 720p 30pN into an existing project on our Avid. (We have a new 3.0 Dual Core Duo with four 750 gb drives for the FCP rig, but our Avid is an Express Elite Meridien on a Compaq HW8000 without SDI.)
I successfully created a 4:3 sequence in FCP, laid some clips over, rendered, and exported as a FCP QT file. I then opened Compressor and tried several different canned settings, with varying degrees of success. The best looking files were done in 8 bit uncompressed, but it is a PIA to do the conversion, drop them on a DVD or thumb drive, and import them into the Avid. Even then, there is some noticable artifacting in the Avid.
We then used the dub feature on the HVX to export P2 media to DV tape in-camera, and the resulting footage is spectacular. The only issue is that it is squeezed when played back on the DSR-45 – until I went to 16:9 on the PVM 20M4U, and then it really looked great!
I RTFM’ed the HVX manual, searched the friendly archives, and read everything I could find in Barry’s book, but what I am wondering is 1) can I dub P2 media letterboxed to the DV tape in camera? and 2) if not, what would you reccommend?
Finally, what are the best settings for Compressor for creating QT files for transfer to the Avid?
