Color Correction Rendering
Hi Guys,
I’m working with some DVCPRO HD 720p25 footage. I drop it into the FCP timeline and it plays fine without rendering. However when I go on to make color corrections using Color Corrector 3-way, it has to render the entire clip. Now forgive me if this is nothing new to people but just wanted to get clarification. I thought because I was using the Easy Setup for the footage I captured, I wouldn’t need to render color correction as I thought this was in Real Time.
My clip seetings are: Vid Rate: 25fps and compressor: DVCPRO HD 720p50 and am using the DVCPRO720p25 Easy Setup. Have tried in the Apple Discussions forums but no-one knows whats going on, just like me!!!
If someone could clarify this for me that would be great!

What kind of computer do you have and what drive are you editing off of?

Working on a Dual 2.3 Ghz PowerMac, and working off the internal drive. Is this the problem.

The computer is not, the hard drive most likely is. The RT engine in FCP relates to how fast your hard drive is. Faster hard drive means more rt. Editing off of your boot drive is never recommended. Getting your self an inexpensive 2 drive SATA array (or better) will do you wonders.

Hmmm!
Isn’t the problem more likely that FCP doesn’t support 720p50?
I’m new to the HVX200 and have just discovered there’s no FCP support for 720p50 – which is the codec you get if you do any Interval footage.Please correct me if I’m wrong.

The codec is called 720p50, just like when you edit 720p24 material in FCP, the compressor is 720p60. In this case, the frame rate of 25p Native is the deciding factor. If he shot in 50p he’d be up a creek without some trickery. When he plays his material without cc, he can play it just fine. If he gets a faster drive he should be able to cc in real time.

Incidentally, my media’s on a 1TB G-Raid – presumably that’ll run 720p25 OK on a Quad with 8GB RAM?I’ll start a new post for my next question!

Yeah, it’ll can be slow at times, but if you have a GRaid, it’ll work pretty well if you are editing DVCPro HD native.
