Anyone else unhappy that panasonic is offering an 8GB P2 card as a rebate? I haven’t had my HVX that long, and here’s this huge perk. Damn.

Unhappy isn’t the word for it. This grief has become a way of life. It seems like the last three or so Macs I have bought were updated within a month to either higher ghz or more processors FOR THE SAME MONEY.
The most recent is a MacBook I just got a month ago and now they offer the same MacBook for the same money with Dual Dual Core processors.
I have been buying Apple computers (and these modern cameras are just computers) for 21 years, religiously upgrading every 12 to 18 months and get caught about every 4th time.
At least in the car business they inform you they are about to go to a new model year. Computer makers know damn well they are about to introduce a new updated model of what you are buying but don’t have the decency to admit it. They prefer to sting you and take the abuse because they have a pretty well cornered market.
Don’t get me talking about software update charges…..

ps: to top it off I just dropped $1100 on an 8 gig P2 that it looks like I should have gotten free.

    Hi guys:

While I feel your pain, you are suffering from the grass is always greener syndrome. If you are a pro, buy the gear and make money with it, a new upgrade of processor or a free 8 GB P2 card are nothing in comparison to the profit that your newish gear should have made you.

There will always be a newer faster Mac just a few months away. If you are a long time Mac user, you can usually (not always) logically predict when the new models will be announced, if not necessarily when they will be shipping.

As far as the 8GB P2 card, sure, it’s nice, who wouldn’t want it, but OTOH, wasn’t it nice having a shiny new kick ass HVX for the past few months? I bought four of them this year and between the revenue they have generated and the revenue they have saved over renting Varicams and F900s, they have been worth their weight in gold. We bought 10 8GB P2 cards this year. Expensive? Sure, but not in comprison to “real” HD gear that we thought we might have to buy in 2006.

And if you buy an HVX before NAB, you will probably have kittens when the new killer HVX-200A with built-in cappucino machine is announced at NAB, but will ship until January 2008. It’s never going to end guys, get used to it.

OTOH, if you are a hobbiest, well, yep, damn, you bought too soon, wait until 2009 when the HVX-300A is introduced! 😉 As for me, I am making money and shooting better looking images than I ever thought I could.

    Best,

    Dan

My 2 cents here. I have also had that happen many a times and they always seem to get me when they have a deal. 2 Macs ago they were $300 off sticker price and I thought, ya I’ll get it, 2 weeks later newer faster same price machine comes out.

So I wouldn’t be supprised if Panasonic has something on the horizon like 16 and 32 meg cards by end of the year, Just a guess.

The advice I’ve had is 16gb’s are at least six months out but will be very closely followed by 32’s.

Apple will be coming out with a new dual QUAD CORE machine very soon. Intel has a timeline of a 50 core machine in 5 years. So its feasible that we see a doubling of power again every 12 months from here on in.

Like the above poster mentioned, they’ll always be coming out with something better and cheaper, but in the meantime you should be making money with your new gear.
