  Shooting 12fps, Edit/View in FCP

  Hello,

  We are shooting a commerical, and our DP has this idea to undercrank to 12fps, and wants it to play back how he sees it record on the camera’s LCD. Is there a legit way to do this?
  Ideally this method of shooting is used for fast motion, but i believe he just wants the kind of ‘strobe’ effect that he is shooting with.

  I import it into the timeline (DVCPROHD-100 720pn30), and I adjust the speeds at which the clip plays back and what we see is not what our DP was hoping for.

  I’m doing this all on side with an HVX200, 8 gig P2 Cards, and i’m doing the editing and importing on a PowerBook G4 1.67 ghz 2GB ram and running FCS 5.1.

  Please let me know if there is anything else you would need to know to understand this strange workflow.

  Looks like i’m asking before thinking.

  I slowed down a few clips to 40% to match the 12fps, and something was wrong.. I didn’t realize I had “frame blending” checked when adjusting the clip speed, which should obviously be off to achieve a stobe type effect.

  Take a peek into the manual- if you want to properly undercrank it involves setting the proper frame rate on the camera and then using the frame rate converter plugin.

  I do this all the time….Shoot at 12 fps in the 720 24pN setting…
  In FCP just use the motion tab and make the clip play at 50%….
  With the frame rate hack you can shoot from 2fps and I have
  presets for 2 4 6 and 8 – who do I appreciate?
  and using your shutter you can dial the shutter up to 350
  degrees for some real cool effects…
  Does not involve the Frame Rate convertor at all….
  That is only used for footage shot at 720 60p 59.94

  Sure. Just shoot in 720p mode, *not* 720pN. It’ll record exactly as it looks in the LCD.
