  • P2 – Firestore – Long clips being made into multiple 2 gig files

I am using a Firestore FS-100 on a HVX 200 and it works great, EXCEPT that every 2 minutes of HD recording the Firestore makes a new clip.

Here is what Focus Enhancement says: “That is correct, the FireStore units only record a maximum of 2 gigs per clip, due to the FAT32 engineered on the units. I’m sorry, but there is no way out of it.”

My producer spoke with a Panasonic Engineer who said: “The Organize P2 function (on the Firestore) should put the long clips together and if you shot a 20 minute clip you should be importing one clip 20 minute long” — Not ten clips that need to be assembled.

Is anyone getting their Firestore to assemble and import long shooting sessions as a single clip?
Is there a step I am missing after running the Organize P2 function?

If you’re using an MXF-aware application (like EDIUS Broadcast) then yes it should import it all as one big clip.

If you’re using a non-MXF-aware editing app like FCP, then there’s no way around it AFAIK, you have to deal with separate clips.

Thank you Barry. Yes, I am using FCP 5. I understand FCP’s next upgrade should be MFX-aware.

    [pada01] “I understand FCP’s next upgrade should be MFX-aware.”

That would be magnificent if it were true. Do you have any information to lead us to be optimistic? I don’t know if Apple plans on doing it or not, but I haven’t heard them say that they will.
