  Importing P2, What about FCP Sequence Presets?

  Hi,

  I shot using 720/24pn and successfully imported my P2 footage into FCP (File/Import/Panasonic P2 following Shane’s tutorial so I have .mov files plus .mxf files in backup). This was done on location and at the time I didn’t check the FCP Sequence Presets (I think they were DV NTSC 48kHz instead of DVCPRO HD 720p24). Since then an editor has put a rough assembly together, his FCP Sequence Settings are — Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (960×720) Editing Timebase: 23.98 Compressor: DVCPRO HD 720p60.

  Editing a rough cut has been fine, but I want to make sure that when I lock picture and go to finish my film at a Post House (D5), that there aren’t any snags. Do I need to reimport the MXF files to FCP with the right sequence preset? Or is it just a matter of changing my FCP settings in the current assembly?

  Any input on the best way to make sure my picture quality and data are right and how to prep for sound and color correcting would be great. Thanks.

  Those are the right sequence presets. 720p24 24pn is 960×720 23.98 720p60 compressor.

  To output to D5 you can output directly from the timeline using a Kona 2, Kona 3 or Decklink HD cards, or create an 8-bit uncompressed sequence, copy and paste your footage into that for better rendering compression for color correction then output.

  Thanks Shane. For redundancy’s sake, so it didn’t matter what the FCP settings were at the time of import from the P2 cards? I mean so long as I had the driver installed then that’s all I needed on that part of my workflow.

  It doesn’t matter what your settings on import are. The settings they were shot as determine how they will be imported. But if you want to work with them in a timeline without rendering, then you need to choose the appropriate easy setup.
