  • P2 card formatting clarification?

Posted by Frank Nolan on August 15, 2006 at 8:10 pm

I just want to clarify some formatting issues.

    1) The cards can only be formatted in camera when in MCR mode, so no formatting card in slot 1 while recording on card in slot 2 ?
    2) Once a card has been formatted in the camera, does it need to be reformatted every time?
    3) I just unloaded the footage in a G4 powerbook PCMCIA slot to an ext HDD, it seemed to work ok to then just drag the contents
folder and last clip .txt file to the trash and empty it before ejecting the card. I was able to then record on the card again. Is this
    acceptable?
    4) If not, what would be a workaround if you dont have a P2 store or P2 drive and you wanted to do continuous recording?

Pana says you should reformat the cards in the camera every time you use them. The issue with erasing them from the computer seems to be some left over junk that can build up over time and reduce the usable space on the cards, (or so is my understanding). As far as I know, if you are hot swapping cards through the camera and do not have time to switch to MCR mode to format them, you should be fine. Just format them in the camera as often as you can. I’ve done this in windows and never had a problem.
