Panasonic HVX-200, P2 Cards and the AJ-SD-93 deck
Hi everyone, I am new to this so I hope you guys can help me out. I am currently working on a DVD project which I will edit in Final Cut Pro. It includes BetaCam SP footage, Sony (HDR-HC1) HDV footage and footage shot/or about to be shot on the HVX-200.
I have committed to the DVCPRO 50 codec and so I am looking to get the Panasonic SD-93 deck to transfer the beta footage, and to up/downconvert the HDV footage.
My main question is that I would like to use the SD-93 as a DVCPRO 50 recording device (connected via Firewire) when using the HVX-200 during shoots where the camera is static, and in a studio. Will this method have the same quality as recording directly onto a P2 card? If the quality is the same I would like to use the deck because all of the footage wll be of long interviews (up to 60mins), so I prefer not having to swap out the P2 cards.
Does anyone have experience using the SD-93 deck and recording at different frame rates, and more specifically have tried converting beta or HDV footage to DVCPRO 50?
This post is not exclusively a P2 camcorder question so I apologize in advance for this.

Not sure where the 93 would come into play with HDV- not a supported format on that or any Panny gear. You’d have the simplest time probably capturing the HDV from an deck or camera and converting to DVCPRO50 or what have you within FCP.

Can you please let me know how I can convert the HDV to DVCPRO50 in FCP?
If the SD-93 deck cannot handle HDV, would it work if I used the downconvert option on the camera so that it is outputed as DV?

Capture HDV into FCP- export as QuickTime to DVCPRO50 or better AIC or 8 bit uncompressed using a standard definition sequence to output the clips. Or better- avoid the HDV altogether and shoot on one camera or two matched if possible.

Thank you very much for your response. Is there any chance you can give me more information on how I can use FCP to output the HDV footage as AIC or 8bit uncompressed. will these two formats (AIC 8bit) require rendering if edited in a DV-50 timeline?

Or you could simply export to DVCPRO50 from HDV. My point is that HDV and DVCPRO50 cannot co-exist in the same timeline without rendering. So you can either render everything HDV into DVCPRO50 you capture up front and then you’ll be able to edit everything on a DVCPRO50 timeline. Or avoid HDV altogether because this is going to be a hassle. Or dub the HDV down to DVCPRO50 via the HDV camera’s S-video output.

Would you happen to know if recording onto tape by connecting the SD-93 to the HVX-200 via firewire and shooting in DVCPRO50 mode will be the exact same as shooting DVCPRO50 on the P2 cards?

I haven’t tested that. You might lose the 24pA flags. Highly recommend testing all of this as it’s a bit off the tracks.

It looks like you will be mixing 4:3 (beta sp) with 16:9 (hdv and hvx footage) as well.
