HVX200 Workflow
Thanks in advance, I apologize for the long post.
I am going to be editing a 30 minute film beig shot on a HVX200 in 720 24p in the fall. My duties are going to be two-fold:
1. I am going to be on location during the 7 day long shoot to edit dailies.
2. Do the creative final edit, the film will be finished in a HD suite.
Question 1: I have a Mac mini 1.4 g4. Will that be be fast and robust enough to edit rough dailies using an external firewire drive, and using the camera to monitor the footage?
Question 2: I have a dual 2.0 G5 and fcp 5.1. I will not have access to the camera during the actual edit. I need a way to monitor the footage as I edit. As far as I can tell I can buy either a Decklink or Kona card to down convert the footge to sd so I can monitor it on a sd crt, or I can buy a consumer HD tv and monitor it through my dvi connection, or I’ve seen that sony has a “production” quality lcd monitor that you can buy an optional firewire input card for. The final color correction will be done at a professional hd house using a davinci or spirit so I am only interested in viewing the video at decent quality to make edit decisions. What is the best (and most cost effective solution)?

No…and here’s why. For DVCPRO HD footage you need at least a firewire 800 drive and connection (I recommend G-Raids highly), and the Mac Mini does not have a firewire 800 port. So for that fact alone, it will not work.
And while you can use the camera to monitor the footage, you won’t be seeing a true HD signal, as the only video out connections the camera has are component and S-Video. Not good enough for color correction.

I use digital Cinema Preview on a second monitor (I have two Dell 2405 monitors) to get an approximation of the footage. Mainly it is just a “client” monitor, a way to view it full screen. That would be the cheapest I suppose. Because if you don’t have access to the camera, you will need an HD capture card capable of outputting analogue to an SD monitor or TV (Kona LH) and then the SD monitor or TV.
I myself have a Decklink HD Card that ran $599 (now Decklink only sells the Extreme HD for $999) and just bought a Sony PVM 14L5 monitor with HD SDI inputs. But that is for color correction. Your best bet will be a second LCD monitor (Apple or Dell) and Digital Cinema Preview.

Would a macbook pro with a firewire 800 port work?
On location, seeing the standard definition out of the camera to a monitor should be fine, I am just cutting rough dailies to make sure the scenes work out.
