Not sure if this was shown at NAB or not, but i came accross this product from bella that lets you use any usb2 hard drive to record video from any firewire equipt camera. They specifically mention DV and HDV. Price is less than $300 available sometime this year.

If someone could realease something similar for the HVX, that would solve the workflow issues for lots of people that need to shoot documentary situations that last all day.

My understanding is the device is tethered to an iPod and converts firewire DV or HDV footage into mpeg4 video for an iPod.

Hmmm, I wasn’t at NAb but there’s no mention of mpeg4 on their website and this line:

“Catapult is the world’s first device to allow capture of video footage from DV or HDV video cameras directly to iPods or virtually any USB drive, and begin editing immediately. ”

from their website makes me think it’s not mpeg4, but I could be wrong. Where did you get the idea that it conversts video to mpeg4?

    It says USB2 here:
    >>>>Catapult is the world’s first device to allow capture of video footage from DV or HDV video cameras directly to iPods or virtually any USB drive, and begin editing immediately.<<<<< But further down says: >>>The Catapult is designed to work with DV and HDV format cameras that include a FireWire connection, such as those from Sony, Canon, JVC, and Panasonic.<<< Which is it? It is only drive that stores data, but it doesn’t have the ability to write the 100mbs from the HVX. The Panasonic cameras it is referencing have to be the MPEG cameras from the consumer side of the house. It was the write speed that was the first hurdle for Focus to cross when bring the FS-100 into reality.

    Hope this helps,

Tim, are you shooting with an HVX? What new projects are you working on? Are you going to be teaching anymore film classes?
