1950’s lamp flashes
Hi guys. 😉
I’m starting the post production of a short movie set in the fifties.
In the shots there is a conference where some journalists make “fake” photos (the things actually were not working being original), and I’ve been asked to add the flashes of the lamps on the cameras and environment.
What are good ways to do this? I’ll of course work on masks to light the actors and stuff, but what about the actual flash? Being in the fifties it will be pretty strong but I don’t think it will last more than 2 frames.
Do you have any suggestions?

The trick I think is not animating the bright phase of the flash, but the cooling down of the bulb after- that takes a few frames more.

There is indeed a shot like that, but the other clips actually have the lamps towards the actors, showing the back to the camera. What could be a good way to create the light? *mumble*
White solids in add, maybe some orange ones to fine edges. The reference you gave me could indeed be a great starting point to create, frame by frame, the “death” of the lamp after the burst.

Michelle, here’s an old tutorial using the lens flare effect to create flashes. Just my 2 cents, but I would add tritone effect and tint the midtones a very light blue.

That really is a good point.. I think that in the close shots I’ll have to create a masked shadow of items and actors on the background, indeed.
If anyone has any suggestion or maybe “technical idea” about “how-to”, let me know!
