Just installed the P2 reader on my PC.
I have been testing out workflow issues.
I also have a 17″ PB with FCP Studio.
For the past week I have imported footage from
the P2 card to the PB.
I have also transferred the P2 contents for BackUp.
But the levels coming out of the Apple look
much higher than than what the PC is showing on the
P2 viewer. I have made QT movies from the Apple
and the levels do not match what is on the cards??
Is there something I am missing in FCP??

I pulled my .mov into After Effects on the PC and the levels
look good there. But when I look at Raylight converted
.avi’s the levels are lighter than the .mov created in
FCP. I have set-up everything along the way.
I can’t believe anyout from P2. What is the best method
for assuring proper levels when editing and
then going back and forth from PC to MAC??

I guess you know that Macs have a highter monitor gamma then PCs. But I thought it might be worth mentioning. I’ve not done extensive testing, but stuff looks pretty much as I’ve been expecting on my Panasonic monitor out of my AJA card.

I’m curious though. Going to check it out.

OK, I just ran a test because this worried me a little bit.

Shot on the camera then played out through the component outs to my Panasonic BTLH1700 monitor. This monitor has a built in waveform monitor. It’s crude, but for these purposes seemed to do the trick.

Comparing the component out of the camera to the output (same footage post P2 import to FCP) via SDI from a Kona card the waveforms are the same. Visually I see no difference either. I see no difference in levels or quality of the footage (ie. conversion problems)

My conclusion is that you are having a monitoring issue rather than an issue with the footage or conversion. Keep in mind that PC monitors do have a lower gamma than Macs. this may be the rub, but you can be confident that FCP is not messing with your footage.

A humble servant to boucing light,

    Hello David,

It was an RGB Gamma issue. I was exporting from FCP as YUV and
After Effects no like YUV wants RGB. Exported as RGB and all is
    well again, Thanks

Yep. Welcome to FCP and AE. It’s been a gamma war for years around here.
