Overcrank Quality?
Seeing I don’t have a unit to test this myself, and seeing that to me this is such a huge feature-how good is the quality of the overcranking with the HVX2000? Is it much better than reducing the speed of a shot in post? Does it look as good as, say 16mm, shot at 60fps and played back at 24fps, or does it look more like video slowed 50$?
I’d really appreciate any thoughts on this topic. Thanks in advance.

The HVX’s effect is the same more or less comparable to film shot at 60fps because 60 discrete frames are literally being captured per second. This is unlike post-production video slow motion effects where new frames are interpolated from the original video footage to create new frame rates. The degree of sharpness in the individual frames is determined by the shutter speed. Here’s one pretty cool example:

Thanks guys, nice footage. I feel like shooting machine guns at computer equipment – will shooting in undercrank mode always cause such violence?
There was a post a few weeks ago on the HDV board (I’ll link it below) that detailed an option of shooting 1080i (of course it was SDI out the new canon XL-H1 into a Kona card, so obviously not a cost effective way of getting the effect) and then converting it to 720/24p. Price aside, is that basically what is happening with the HVX2000?

No, it’s not like what the Canon does. The Canon thing was taking an interlaced image and creating a field out of each frame. The HVX is true variable frame rate progressive scan, and not just at 60fps, but also at 48 and 36 and 32 and 30 and 26 and 24 and 22 and 20 and 18 and 12 fps. Each frame is imaged discretely at the set interval, just like a film camera would.

Just got back from a 14 hr shoot in Brevard NC, I shot approxamately 12 min of footage and it was all overcrank, 60 frames. This was for GE. The product was Lexan. Shooting a 2×4 out of a homemade cannon,fired by compressed air. The cannon was built from pvc pipe and looked like a homemade potato gun. They first told me I had to set up behind the Lexan, and get a shot comming straight at the camera. I said ok, but this a $90,000 varicam and if the 2×4 hits the camera. YOU PAY. So this shot did not happen. I took a 24″ Dell mon, and when we shot the first take we previewed the shot. when the rep from GE saw the playback she was realy impressed, and thats when you know you can get the job done. When we arrived they didn’t know they were going to get this slow mo shot. When I told them I could do it. They were impressed from the start. And so was I.
So fellows add this as another selling tool to the list of things you have to offer.
