MXF in FCP
Posted by Venda J on October 22, 2005 at 5:15 pmI downloaded a MXF file and I can’t get it into FCP. I read the P2 data sheet and it says that all files are stored in the MXF file. Now FCP5 says it supports P2. So why can’t I see or get at this file.
Seems to me that FCP only is able to see the P2 card but not read/use the info on it without flip4mac. Why so many steps? The price for Flip4Mac is crazy and Panasonic should make it so we can use these files without all the run around. Am I missing something?

Since your problem is with FCP not with Panasonic perhaps you should repeat this question on the FCP forum. I’d like to hear what they have to say. I’ve been wondering if FCP could work with these MXF files. Perhaps what they call P2 support consists only of capture in realtime over 1394 from camera or quasi deck. Several PC solutions are like that at this time.

October 23, 2005 at 12:20 amI posted in the FCP forum but I am hoping that some of the big brains here can share the knowledge. The more I read the more I am confused about workflow. The apple site says that FCP works with P2 to me that means it sees the cards and reads whats on them and lets you use as you please. Anything else is halfass.

Did you follow the instructions in the FCP User Manual? There are very detailed instructions on how to import media from P2 cards. MXF is simply a container file, the media needs to be converted to Quicktime for FCP to use.
I just did a search using the “Help” feature in FCP and it brought up a full PDF on working with HD formats. The full import instructions are right there.

October 26, 2005 at 5:39 pmWe had a demo in here a while back and after using it a little I have to say I am a little dissapointed with how FCP works with P2. You can import using something in the file menu. I think it’s Import P2. The downside is that FCP cannot see any of the meta data associated with the media. So if you’ve flagged a shot as being especially good or included a voice memo, you can’t access it in FCP. However, I believe there is a program out there that lets you see all that seperately.
So “support” is such a loose term. Hopefully, there will be improvements in the next installment of FCP.

October 30, 2005 at 5:00 pmHi folks,
the workflow is as follows:
You can import the P2 data definitely in FCP5, this is what I do every day. You hook the camera via USB into a mac with Tiger and FCP5. Make shure you put the P2 cards into protect mode, otherwise they won’t show up as HD on the desktop. Once the P2 cards show up you have two possibilities. Either you copy the contents folder onto HD, or you open up FCP and choose import P2. Each P2 card shows up, you choose the first, click on import all files and that`s it. Make shure you repeat the process for each P2 card. You need the camera, the PCMI slot in teh mac doesn`t recognize the P2 card. This is difgferent to Windows.
I hope this will helpregards Rainer
