Doing away with tape (and especially capturing tape) is a dream come true for me. Logging is by far the most tedious and time wasting event of my post production workflow. So naturally Im very excited that I will have all my clips perfectly logged automatically by the camera.

However, what type of file naming convention will it use? It would be fantastic if the user could have control over the naming convention so we could log clips with the appropriate title/scene and take information.

If we have our clips logged with random numbers, we will still have to go through and name everything appropriately before editing can begin.

Does anyone know what type of control the user has over this?

Hi Emery: As you may know, the Panasonic HVX200 won’t ship in final form for a few months at least. Until then, folks who know what the cam will do are under NDA contract and therefore normally shouldn’t or won’t say what they know unless given permission by Panasonic. So, although someone might offer information, few are authorized to do it. Jan Crittenden Livingston, the HVX200 product manager, is a notable exception. So one might not expect answers to every question concening this camera, especially since it won’t be shipping until “sometime later this year.” It’s OK to ask, but answers to many questions about this cam are either not public info, unknown, hard to come by, or pure speculation.

In the latter category of speculation: I’m not under NDA and I don’t know how the HVX200 will handle P2-resident clip naming and other “metadata”, but it’s _possible_ it may be similar to how the current model SPX800 high-end 2/3″ SD camcorder handles it — or not. It seems reasonable that for compatibility purposes, P2 devices may handle clip naming in a similar or near-identical fashion, but this might not necessarily be the case.

Unfortunately, the PDF copy of the SPX800 manual I have is locked and doesn’t allow copy & paste, so I can’t include an excert here, regrets. The section on P2 metadata looks fairly comprehensive, but this copy of the manual might not be a final or current version. For example, the current shipping version of the SPX800 cam includes a new 24p feature, but this feature is not covered in the version of the manual I have. The manual for the SPX800 cam is not available for downloading, regrets. I received my copy via snail-mail from a Panasonic sales manager.

In any event, I haven’t memorized this manual yet, but I don’t recall seeing a section describing how to name clips with text using the camera itself. The SPX800 allows you to assign a “Voice memo” to a clip, using a special small mic mounted on the operator’s side of the cam. But I haven’t see instructions on naming clips with text with some sort of alphanumeric picklist or such; however, I may have simply missed this info, regrets.

I believe I’ve read references to a Windows/PC app which Panasonic provides for managing P2 cards on a laptop or PC. Perhaps this app allows clip naming? I don’t know.

    All the best,

    – Peter
