DVCPRO 50 to tape?
On the new camera AG-HVX200 does anyone know if it will record DVCPro50 to the tape? I know it will to the P2 cards but I’m hoping it will to tape.

The HVX200 will only record DV to tape.
All other formats are recorded to P2.

I guess that if you plug in a DVCpro50 deck into the camera you could record live out to DVCpro50?? Other than that, you have to record to P2 as the deck in the camera is DV only. It would have bumped the price of the camera way up if they’d put in DVCpro50 recording, never mind DVCproHD recording to tape!

one can dream, while I’m at it wouldn’t a 20x HD lens on it for the same price be nice. 🙂 sorry it’s too early for dreaming.

Adding DVCPRO50 to tape would have raised the price about $7,000. And made the camera much, much larger.
Adding DVCPRO-HD to tape would have raised the price about $15,000. That’s what the parts cost. The cheapest DVCPRO-HD deck on the market (with firewire out) is $25,000.
By going with P2 they were able to deliver the DVCPRO-HD format at a massively cheaper price.
Look at the SDX900 vs. the SPX800 — basically the exact same camera, except the SPX records to P2, the SDX records to tape. The SPX is about $8,000 less than the SDX.
P2 recording makes it possible to do things at a price point that was never possible before. That’s one of the things that’s so cool about it.
