[Randle G. Mason] “… Panasonic at NAB also introduced another P2 Camera, the AJ-SPC700. …”
Hi Randle: Yes, the SPC700 looks like a very cool cam, and it would be _perfect_ for me, _except_ it doesn’t include 24p support. These days a $13K USD video camera should include 24p (and 25p PAL). Period.
Hello, Panasonic: It’s 2005! Their $3,500 USD DVX-100a cam has it, so a $13K cam should have it too!
If Panasonic says this cam is “for” TV news and they don’t need 24p, then that’s a COW pie! These days there’s really no such thing as a camera “for” the TV news ENG market or whatever. People have been using ENG cams for all sorts of non-ENG productions for years. It’s a BS argument.
It’s obvious Panasonic omitted 24p/25p support simply to protect sales of their more expensive cam models.
IMHO, this is really stupid & shortsighted. If Panasonic wants to make more money and continue to kick Sony’s butt, they have to stop putting up artificial barriers between themselves and their customer’s cash. Lots of folks can’t afford $20K & up cams, and may never buy them. But leaving a feature like 24p/25p out of a $13K cam won’t “force” many people to spend twice as much. Instead, they’ll go elsewhere or stay on the sidelines.
However, if the AJ-SPC700 actually does have 24p/25p support (or is upgradable to 24p/25p like I believe the AJ-SPX800 recently was???), then my bad, and I take all of the above back! But Panasonic’s brochure for the AJ-SPC700 says no 24p/25p and no option for it.
All the best,
– Peter
