    Hi,

Just looking for the actual bit rates, resolutions & frame rates the DVCProHD codec supports. Bit rates as they releate to non tape media (ie P2) where only the needed frames need be saved

    eg:
    960x720p 24fps 40 Mbps (I think)
    960x720p 25fps B Mbps
    960x720p 30fps C Mbps
    960x720p 48fps D Mbps
    960x720p 50fps E Mbps
    960x720p 60fps F Mbps
    etc (1080i/p etc)

Thanks in advance if anyone knows this stuff.

    AFAIK, the HDX200 does 720p24 and 720p30 and 720p60, at 40, 50 and 100mps, giving a constant compression per frame of 1.6666mbpf.

Thanks Grahame, but I wasn’t actually asking about the HDX200, but the DVCPRO HD codec itself. The 1.6666mbpf would help with calculations though.

What is the 1080i resolution for DVCPRO HD? Is it 1920×1080, 1440×1080 or I think I have even seen something odd like 1280×1080. Are these also 1.6666mbpf? What about 1080p, same mbpf?

The codec itself is 1280×1080 for 1080i, each frame is 1.666mp, and yes, same for 1080p.

So DVCPRO HD 1080i/p is quite a bit more compressed than its 720p then. I guess its to be able to use the same transport for its tape format, but with P2 they wouldn’t have to limit themselves to that rate if they wanted to extend the codec some more.

    How about 1080i50?

Sorry. Got my figures mixed up. The 1.666 is for 720p. For 1080 you must double that number as it has half as many frames per second. Got to stop writing posts when I’m asleep. 🙂

So the 1080 mode and the 720 mode have identical compression levels per pixel per frame.

Details on the “PAL” DVCproHD are slim at the moment. I really don’t know enough to answer that one.

Graeme if I am not mistaken the numbers are relatively the same for 1080 and 720 in regards to DVC Pro HD.
1080 has less frames but more pixels.

My mistake. Talking about data rate per frame and not per second.

1080 has half the frame rate and double the pixels precisely, making the compression per pixel the same.
