I am following the advice someone once gave me for delivering a video that needs to play 16:9 on a widescreen TV and be letterboxed for 4:3 TVs. I was told to do the following:

“Try creating a comp that is 864×486 (16:9). This will be the resolution that all your comping is done in. Then create a comp that is 648×486 (4:3) and drop the 864 comp into it. The edges on the left and right will be offscreen (this is normal) while the vertical size fits perfectly. Then create a copy of that comp and scale the 864 layer to fit the width of 648, this will leave black visible on the top and bottom of the frame.”

Well, I have done so, and now im confused, which version is the widescreen and which version is the 4×3?

If one of the comps is cropped on the left and right, isnt that a 4×3 version? And if one of the comps is letterboxed, isnt that ALSO 4×3?

    Please help! Thanx!

It’s a video that is going to be played at the beginning of a video game, and needs to accomodate both widescreen and 4×3.
