Question about Border Width of rectangle tool
Working at 1080p. Using the rectangle tool (an object; not a mask). After drawing a rectangle that’s roughly 1/6th the size of the video window, when I enable Border (Inspector | Shape | Style) and select even the smallest width value, the border is quite wide. If this were Illustrator or Photoshop it’s as if the thinnest border available is 20pts. What am I missing?

You need to select Under Fill from the Outline/Order menu, then you can make the outline as thin as you want.

I had tried that previously with no change in the border thickness. After reading your reply I tried it again the border remains the same. The width was already at 1.0 and it’s still rather thick in my opinion. See attached screen grab. It doesn’t change when I select under fill. The rectangle is a about 1/4 the size of my 1080p frame. I should think at the minimum border size it would be much thinner.

Because you are obviously scaling up a small rectangle rather than making it large to begin with you will also need to make sure you check the Preserve width checkbox, then you will always be able to achieve the minimum width of 1px.

I’m going to file this under Motion 5 Idiosyncrasies: to have finer control over border width start with a huge rectangle, apply border, then resize down.

You might be over-thinking this possibly 😉
Using the Preserve Width option means your border doesn’t get scaled with your shape. Not using it means your border does get scaled with the shape.
Both are desirable outcomes depending on what you want to achieve at any one time.
