Photoshop on the PC and Motion
I have a client who is working with FCP7 and Motion 4, and I am sending him files for an on-air look from Photoshop on the PC. It appears that FCP7 doesn’t work as well with layers as Motion does, so I’ve been sending him layered PSD files, but it will only read them from Photoshop CS4 – it flattens anything I send from CS5. I’m assuming that Motion 4’s vintage is from before CS5 existed, so it doesn’t know how to deal with the layering schema in CS5.
Has anyone dealt with this in a different way? Right now, since I’ve been designing the look in PS CS5 (and am about to upgrade to CS5.5), I’ve been having to export to .png layers, then import them back into Photoshop CS4 (there’s a batch process for this in Bridge, luckily). It doesn’t take long to do, but it’s a pain in the neck. Thanks.

I’ve done lots of projects in Photoshop CS5.1 and they come into Motion 4 great. What will not come in is stuff like the layer Styles and filters. You have to “bake” those layers.

Thanks Stephen – that’s odd – there must be something going on with my client and the way he’s importing the files. What I’m sending has nothing in the way of layer effects or anything – just flat raster graphics, and they are coming in flattened – no layers.
Of course my client is under the gun working 14 hour days 7 days a week to get the daily news show edited – there may be some fryage going on.

Something just occurred to me – is it possible that because I was using the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS4, that that could be the cause of the problem? I’m redoing it, bring the layers in to the 32-bit version of CS4, and giving that a try with the client. That’s the only variable I can think of – every layer is clean, just bitmaps with no FX at all. By the way – the file I posted for you is the 64-bit version – I sent it before it dawned on me that this could be the problem.

Sorry, I checked my e-mails backwards and didn’t see that you already posted the PSD. I just brought it into Motion just fine. If you like a can post a screen capture video of me doing it to send to the client so they can see that it works great and maybe how to do it. Just let me know.

If you have the time, that would be great Stephen – I can only imagine that it’s user error on the client’s side. The one file I sent him that he got to work (importing as layers) is in exactly the same format I’ve sent him since, with just plain vanilla bitmap layers. Thanks so much.
