trouble with masking
New to motion 5 and editing in general – so I apologize in advance if this is a somewhat simple question. I’m trying to apply something similar to a Ken Burns effect to some images that are masked. When I apply a motion to the image the masks move as well and I can’t seem to get that to stop. Ideally I’d like to have the images move slowly behind the masks while the masks stay put. Thanks for your help.

Put the mask on the group containing the image – then you can move the image independently of the mask.

Thanks for the reply Mark. I tried your suggestion, but I was unable to make it work. Perhaps I should elaborate on my project. I’ve attempted (somewhat successfully) to recreate a similar intro as seen at the beginning of the film “the lincoln lawyer”. If you’re not familiar with it, it is a series of stills and video footage sliding around the screen while introducing the cast. Being an amateur at best, my work flow is probably pretty sloppy compared to a professional. However, I was able to get the desired effect only without the slight movement behind the masks. My first group has a number of masks within it, each timed differently with some masks growing while other shrink or disappear. If I’m to understand your first reply – should I have created a new group for each mask?

Thanks again – my high school students will hopefully enjoy this project as it is part of their graduation ceremony.

If you set the Image Mask to “Stencil” (go to the Image Mask properties in the Inspector to find this checkbox), the mask will stay in place and you can move/scale/rotate the image within it. If it is not set to Stencil then the mask will move/scale/rotate with the image.
This might be another way of solving your problem.

It did work, however I was unable to apply the effect to more than one mask found within a group (some of the groups had multiple masks). However, I received an email from Kevin P. McAuliffe and he created a tutorial based on my specific problem. I applied he’s technique and it work very well. Here’s the link for anyone who’s interested.
