    Hi!
I’m trying to replicate something like the plates snapping into place randomly in this clip (Portal 2 trailer, 0:35 – https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=s79wHKe3DDM#t=32s)

I have a replicator setting up a grid of squares moving into place, but they are very “orderly”. I’d like them to move at different speeds or (preferably) with different start times. The best I’ve managed to do is a Randomize on the replicator’s cells’ Position Z parameter, but that just makes them jump around on “their tracks”.

Is there a way to set a random starting time for a replicator’s cell, or set a random speed on a replicator’s cell?

    Thanks!
    /I

Have you tried working with the Sequence Replicator behavior?

Yep, but you inspired me to go back and look through it. I think I’m able to ask a better question now.

I have most of the effect working, except that Shuffle Order in the Sequence Replicator seems to behave symmetrically. Here’s my setup:

    – A 3D replicator, replicating a Rectangle grid of squares (I’ve tried a Box as well, no difference)
    – A sequence replicator, pushing each square 200px on the Z axis, unit size is set to object

At this point, I get a “bulge” in the grid of squares, controlled by the Spread parameter. Since the bulge is far too orderly, I hit Shuffle Order. Now the bulge is broken up, since the order in which the squares move forward is supposedly shuffled and random.

However, the order still displays patterns. If the Origin is center, they come as ripples. Origin: bottom makes them come in rows and so on. I actually found an old thread having the same problem where you suggested the Shuffle order, and it seems to have worked.

    Is this:
    1) a bug/feature in Motion 5?
    2) expected behavior?
    3) me, going crazy and seeing stuff?

    Thanks,

Have you tried changing the Random Seed by clicking the Generate button?

Yep, it just shifts the position of the rings/bands. Odd – should I file a bug with Apple against this? Could I trouble you to try the above steps and see if I’m doing something stupid? It’s a 30 second job, and I’d really, really appreciate confirmation.

    Thanks!

Ivan, I think it’s expected behavior – I see the same thing. The overall Origin is still being respected, but the order for each “layer” is being shuffled – so you never get truly randomized animation. It would be a great feature request.

By the way, I do get more organic. random-looking results by changing the Build Style to Row…

Thank you so much for confirming! Your last screenshot is exactly what I’m looking for – I’ll try it out as soon as I get back home.
    Cheers!
