Change HD template into an SD one? Easy?

It depends, if there are camera movements then forget it.
You are better off rendering the template in HD and then converting it to SD afterwards.

Assuming no camera movements, how then does one proceed to convert the template?

Create a new project with your SD settings. Drag the group/groups (put all of the groups in one group to make your life easy if it is not already that way) from the HD template into the SD’s time line or project pane and Motion will convert the template to the new size and frame rate. You will need to adjust the size of the group/groups so it is best to get everything in the HD template into one group. Hope this helps and best of luck.

An alternative is to work in FCP – just drag the HD template into an SD timeline and it will automatically scale to fit. Of course it will be letterboxed due to the different aspect ratio so you can leave it like that or increase the scale in the Motion tab (open the clip into the Viewer) and crop off the edges.
