Hello I’m new to After Effects. I just got After Effects 5.5 and I’m following a tutorial in the book “Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects”. It’s specifically written for 5.5. But it tells me to use layer modes such as color dodge and overlay but when I pull up the layer modes menu those two modes aren’t listed as an option. They are not greyed out. They are simply not listed. Is it a mistake on the author’s part or should 5.5 have these particular modes available? I appreciate any response. Thanks…

strange, color dodge and overlay were available in AE as far as I can remember.
are you looking in the correct menu?
the color modes menu is in the timeline window under “Mode”
Hit F4 to toggle is this menu is not visible.
A newly created layer will have it set to “Normal”

What modes DO you see right now?

Thanks for your reply. For some reason the menu won’t show certain modes but when I toggle through them using shift and – or = it takes me through all of them. I wonder why? Thanks again….

Certain aspects only have a portion of the mode types available. Under modes and switches is where you will find the whole list. Just follow the layer time line across left to right and you will see the word normal (if you are in the modes function not switches) if you click the word normal it will bring up all the modes. The toggle for switches/ modes is along the bottom of the timeline frame.
