  • Motion Advantages over After Effects?

I teach a high school multimedia course and I have access to both After Effects and Motion. I’m wondering if there would be any reason to teach both programs.

This year I only taught AE – mostly because there were so many great (free) resources available that I was able to learn the software fairly quickly. I haven’t seen much in the way of free training for Motion and I don’t know how to use the software yet.

    1) Are there any advantages to using Motion over After Effects or do they both offer basically the same tools?

    2) Which is more commonly used in “the industry”?

    Thanks for your professional opinions!

Probably the best site for tutorials, etc. is https://applemotion.net/

Motion & AE are very different animals.

AE is very widely used through out the film & video industries for graphics & VFX. It’s very flexible, robust & mature.

Motion is still fairly new & developing quickly, but it’s not as widely used, not as stable, not as mature. It’s included & well integrated with FCP, so it’s becoming more widely used. The toolset is maturing, so it’s becoming more capable & more stable. And it has a terrific particle system, which may be the best reason to learn it right now.

Motion’s strength is titling, graphics and very fast modifications. After Effects is stronger as a compositor.
