Is there a way to have pixel level control over simple shapes like rectangles and oval? I can only find a way to control these with scale, which does not do me much good unless I know the initial size. The ability to create a simple 100px x 100px square would be killer.

Create them as bitmaps in photoshop. In motion they are sized relatively not exactly.

Turn on rulers, add guides, turn on snapping and draw within guides.

You can also go to user preferences and turn on coordinates display in the status bar to help you find your pixel positions.

Vector shapes are not really made up of pixels. They’re described by angles (vectors) & other mathematical formulae. That’s what makes them so flexible.
