New Mac G5 Order
Posted by Gregg Brent on October 25, 2005 at 7:30 pmI’m putting order in for dual core 2ghz G5. I notice there is no option for ATI card, only Nvidia 6600 (or quatro). Does the ATI 800 work in new dual cores? is the 6600 256 good? (the nvidia seems to state the 6800 as leading card)
any info helpful as i’d like to place order soon.

October 25, 2005 at 9:18 pmThe new machines require PCI Express cards not AGP like the prior g5’s.
I think that right now the Nvidia cards are the only options. I think that the 4500FX is supposed to be a good card.

October 25, 2005 at 11:04 pmApple announced that the PCI-Express version of the Nvidia 7800GT would be coming to the Mac. The Quadro 4500 is a fine card, but at a $1650 upgrade price (vs. a likely $500-$600 for the 7800), it doesn’t have a high power/price ratio. The 6600 is a decent card, but I’d upgrade to the 7800GT when it becomes available.

October 26, 2005 at 12:35 pmThe Quadro line of cards are great for scientific visualization and 3D animation. It’s a workstation-class card and on my PC the Quadro card I have blows the lesser Radeon cards out of the water in terms of performance in content creation apps. If you just plan on using it for Motion and not 3D, the 7800 would be a more cost effective solution.

October 27, 2005 at 2:11 amO.K. I will go to the Apple store and check the prices before I open my mouth next time. Sound like the FX card is very good, but at a premium price point.

October 27, 2005 at 3:26 amSo I guess at this point I can ONLY order a G5 with the Nvidia 6600! That kind of sucks I have to wait and can’t order with a card that motion supports.

October 28, 2005 at 2:35 amI would be thoroughly shocked if the 6600 wasn’t supported by Motion. I have yet to see apple lock out a GPU that has pixel shader support (which is all it seems to come down to. if the GPU/core supports pixel shaders, it runs motion)
