Im going crazy since I switched from Mac. (Latency issues)
Right. I have always used Soundtrack pro for recording my audio as it is so easy to use. However, I just got myself a new Dell XPS 14z (very nice it is too). On a recommendation, I installed Adobe Audio 3 as an alternative to Soundtrack Pro but the Latency is killing me. I have updated all drivers and followed all the advice i could find online, (I’m using ASIO4all or whatever it’s called) but It’s still absolutely shocking, must be near 1/4 of a second, so Multitrack recording is absolutely impossible. I never had any Latency problems with the iMac so what’s the deal? Am I doomed forever? Will I have to resign to forking out 5 times the cash for a Macbook?? Someone please tell me there is a way around this. 🙁

You don’t say much at all about your system audio card, so I assume that it’s an on board card. That said, you should be able to work with little or no latency problems:

You called your software “Audio 3”. Can I assume you mean Audition 3? You also don’t say which version (dot version) you have installed. There’s a patch 3.0.1 available which solves a number of problems:

I noticed a couple of places mentioning that WLAN caused latency problems, and if you deactivated it, they went away. Worth a try.

oops! Yeah, I just realised that my post was the most uninformative ever. 😛 Yes, It’s Audition 3.0 I’ll try an update to see if that works. I’m using the onboard soundcard which I have no idea how to find it, all it says is Realtek HD audio. Anyway, I’m off to download the update then turn my Wifi off.

One other thing, Ian – upon looking at the Realtek onboard chipset by doing a Google search “Realtek latency problems”, I found tons of people having the same problems. That said, my HP Z800 workstation has a Realtek onboard chipset has no problems with latency in either Audition CS6, or Sony ACID Studio. Of course, it’s got dual quad core Xeon processors and 48GB of RAM, so that may have something to do with it.

Did you look at the problems and solutions link I sent you? There may be an answer in there for you. When you switch platforms and software there is sometimes a shakedown cruise which can be very frustrating. I’m sure there’s an answer out there – plenty of people create great audio content on both platforms – it may be that the iMac has a more robust card than the Dell, although I doubt it.
You might want to take a look at your settings on the iMac, and see if they can be duplicated on the PC. It might be that your sampling rate on the iMac is lower, or one of many other possibilities. In general, a sound card will give you superior results over an on-board chipset. Here’s a good article on latency:

I have admitted defeat, no matter what i do with regards to drivers or anything, (I bought a USB soundcard and that didn’t work either as it just comes up with a “Beyond Logic” notice) absolutely nothing works. It seems I am destined to just have to use the iMac. Now that’s not a terrible thing but I am supposed to be doing a mobile recording next month and I think I’m gonna have to take the Mac with me instead of the laptop. Why is nothing ever easy? 🙁
