When I ‘open append’ some wav files from a few select CDs in my collection, I can get a crackling sound in the wav during a peak. The distortion occurs maybe once in the CD and is not happening with peaks in general. At first I thought I was introducing the distortion, but it happens when no filters or effects have been applied. Is there there something I can do with tools and effects or to make Audition read the wav with no distortion.

This sounds more like a soundcard issue. What are you using? Your card might not be able to tolerate 0dbFS. Try normalizing to -1dB. If the problem goes away, it’s a soundcard problem.
