  LCD projection: Total Dots and Fine Sync

  Had a very good projectionist the other day telling me that setting up projection can be boiled down to geometry – setting the grid and then getting your fine sync and total dots setup.
  What should you have on the screen to adjust fine sync and total dots?
  I think it was vertical or horizontal lines???? And what is it that you look for when adjusting?

  To set total dots use a vertical burst. Alternating one pixel on and one off to create vertical lines. This must be in the native resolution of the projector. Adjust total dots and you’ll see bands of vertical noise, each adjustment will either add or subtract a band. Adjust until you have 1 big noisy field then adjust fine sync until the burst pattern is solid.

  What you’re doing is setting up the projector to display the exact number of pixels the source is sending. The fine sync then makes sure that the source and the projector are starting each pixel at the same spot.

  All of this goes out the window if you feed dvi which has its timing in the signal.
