I’m using After Effects to make a set of 9 short videos to go on a DVD.

Five of them render out to mpeg-2 beautifully. On the other four, I get some really nasty glitches on the sound track.

The five that render OK are all less than 17 mins 30 sec long. The four that don’t are all longer than 17.30, and the glitches start after 17.30.

There aren’t any glitches on the original material. I don’t get glitches when I preview the audio in AE.

I don’t think this is a rendering problem – I get the same problem whether I render to mpeg2 or avi, or just export the sound as a .wav file.

Tearing my hair about this – project due for publication next month!

    Any ideas?

I’m wondering if the original audio files are corrupted somehow.
Or maybe there’s an issue with file fragmentation?

Is your source audio MP3? If so, convert it to AIFF or WAV in QT player (for example) before importing into AE.

That’s all I can think of right now …

    Thanks for this suggestion.

The source audio is from two .avi files (i.e. it is video and audio combined). The .avi files have been edited in Adobe Premiere before importing into After Effects, and there aren’t any problems in the audio of the files after exporting from Premiere.

    With best wishes.

    Thanks for these suggestions.

I can’t see (or hear) anything wrong with the source audio.

I don’t think it’s a defragmentation issue – the first thing I tried was to defrag the disk the files are on, and this did not solve the problem. Not only that, but the glitches come in the same place every time I render the files – if it was a fragmentation issue, I’d have expected the glitches to move about, depending on where the files were being written onto the disk.

Additionally, there are no changes / key frames etc. in the AE file at the points where the glitches occur.

I’ve tried exporting just the audio as a .wav file, and looking at the file in Audition. It looks as if AE has lost one or more frame’s worth of audio at the point of the glitch – but I still don’t know why. More importantly, I don’t know how to fix it.

    With best wishes

Thanks for this suggestion. I will experiment with it and see whether this solves the problem.

    With best wishes
