iPod commercial tutorial?
Posted by Corey Trotter on August 17, 2005 at 8:05 pmI have a client that wanted the iPod silouhette commercial look. But I don’t have a clue to how they did that and kept certain details in the characters and ipod?

August 17, 2005 at 8:20 pmFilm your actors against a white wall, or greenscreen, with a lot of light on the wall, not so much on the person. That way, they are already almost in full silhouette. Then just start overlaying colors, or you can pull a luma matte. Otherwise, you’ve got a lot of masking to do.

August 17, 2005 at 10:07 pmDefinately a chroma key with a matte fill.Cleanest, quickest and easiest way to get the look. Be sure to light you CK background flat and even.

August 17, 2005 at 10:56 pmI would not light your person as a sihlouette if you want it to be closer to the original spot. There is detail in the person that would just be mush if you didn’t light them. Use a color key BG. After you key them out, then pull all the color out of the person and crush down the levels so that they are almost black, but be conservative with the gammas to retain the detail in brighter area of their clothes you want to show.
As far as the ipod and earbuds, they roto’d it all by hand.
For more advice, this has been asked a LOT back when the spots were airing so search the Cow archives.

Note that some of their clothing was shiny, so they weren’t a complete silhouette as Chris mentioned.
