  • Motion Menu Goes Black When Adding Button

Posted by Tim Walton on December 7, 2014 at 12:47 am

I’m creating a Blu-ray in Encore CS5.5. I built a short (1:30) video to loop as a motion background for the main menu. I import the video and audio as assets, and attach them to the menu. When I preview the menu at this point, both the video and audio play fine. The minute I add a button however, the video goes black (audio still plays fine, and button is visible). Ultimately, I’m trying to create an original button (not a generic one included).

I’ve searched all over the internet and while it appears to be a common problem – I haven’t found a solution that’s worked yet. Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

Thrown up a generic button (included with Enc).
    Dynamically linked menu to PS.
Deleted generic button “group” and created new button group.
Deleted *locked* background layer & created new, unlocked background layer.
Opened After Effects and minimized it in bg.
    Emptied cache in Encore.
Reset loop point to :10:00, then reset it back to 00:00.
    Cold-booted entire computer.

    Anybody have ANY ideas???

    Thanks!

I don’t have any idea if you get the same thing when you add only an Encore library button. I assume your custom button has a non-highlight layer that is full frame.

Try adding an Encore library menu, then add your motion assets to that.

Don’t forget to render the menu each time you make a change.

    Hi Stan –

Thanks for the speedy reply. No, the highlight is not a full-frame image – its just a line that pops up when the button is selected.

Something else I neglected to mention: the looping menu video fades in from black at the beginning, and out to black at the end – so the first frame of video is black. If I reset the loop point to somewhere in the middle of the video, whatever frame it lands on becomes a still image in the background of the menu – while it’s playing (audio still plays fine).

Already tried the library menu and got the same problem when I added the motion assets to it.

Are the video and audio exactly the same length?

    Hi Stan –

    Yes, they are.

I just got it to work. Ran thru all the steps again (including rendering out the preview) and it worked!

    Thanks for the support, though!

    Kind Regards,
