Motion/broadcast graphics tradeshows or events?
Hi everyone- I’m interested in attending an event or two this year. I’m new to this area of design, and have never been to an event centered around interactive, motion graphics broadcast graphics, etc. I would really love to go to something like SXSW, or Adobe MAX but the cost of registering plus traveling to those events, plus the time involved would make it prohibitive in my position.
I’m in the tri-state area, and could afford to be gone from work for a day, maybe two. Does anyone know of any major upcoming events anywhere along the eastern corridor, where I could learn about new technology, techniques and see what’s current in the industry? I’ve done pretty extensive googling, but can’t seem to find anything that’s either close enough, or inexpensive enough for my needs.

I’m in Connecticut, which is part of the only tri-state area I know of. 😉
Thanks for pointing out the NY meetup, although it might be difficult for me to get down there in time. Are there any sort of trade shows in this area centered around motion graphics?
I’ll try to make it to some sort of gathering or user group at some point.

I suppose my tri-state area would be Nebraska-Iowa-South Dakota. Its a big area, but not many motion graphic tradeshows. 😉
I used to fly to various conventions, but I can find most stuff online. If they are accessible to you though, I see their worth. What are you trying to get out of them?

Well, I’m completely self taught via video tutorials, and have done so at my current position at work for over a year now. The problem is, I’m virtually the only one here with skills in this type of thing, so I have no mentors or superiors to teach me anything or to bounce questions off of, etc.
I guess I’m looking for a tradeshow where I could see what software and equipment other people are using, see techniques, go to workshops. Kind of like PhotoExpo in NY, which I go to every year. Completely free, unless you want to do the extras. It seems a lot of these interactive conventions are hundreds or even thousands of dollars, to even walk in the door.
If not, then I guess my next step is to start going to a local group, like Walter suggested.

I don’t know of any tradeshows specifically devoted to motion graphics. However, there are plenty of events in New York that may feature the sorts of things you’re looking for.
