How do you deal with 720×486 source footage?
I’m sure the best advice is to avoid it, but that’s not really helpful.
It seems that with Avid Media Composer, DV25 footage is 720×486 instead of 720×480. When this comes in to Encore, the 486 video gets squeezed into the 480 space, mushing up all the fields and resulting in bad looking video.
In Xpress Pro and XpressDV I could export a Quicktime Reference file with the choice of using or not using the Avid DV Codec. Using the codec resulted in 486 video, not using it gave perfect 480 video. And it looked beautiful in Encore.
In Media Composer you get 486 either way, and if you don’t use the codec there are all kinds of strange problems, not to be discussed here. Both methods look horrible in Encore.
So my question, finally, is there a preference or a hack to allow Encore to properly utilize and crop the 486 video? I can’t find it, but there must be some genius out there who can make it work.
