Reducing Project Size
Hi,
I’ve just done a film project in Encore with about 1 gig of film content, but the project burn size comes to 5.5 gig after adding all the menus, which seems huge to me. Admittedly, there are quite a few menus, as I have 24 short films, but don’t see how they can add up to this amount of space. Is there any way of reucing the size of the files so that the project can burn onto a single-layer disc?

The first thing you should do is check the DVD-ROM content part of the Build tab or Disc tab to see if you’ve inadvertently added any ROM content.

And the next thing to check is the duration of all your video.
A 1 GB video file could be highly compressed with a different codec than used on DVD – all DVD-Video discs must be encoded MPEG-2 for DVD to play back properly in a DVD player.

Thanks. The videos are in MPEG2 and come to about 50 minutes in duration. There’s no cd-rom content either… What else could be taking up that amount of space?

Do your MPEG-2 files contain audio? If so, either strip the audio out and import separately, or export elementary streams from your encoder.

Yes, there is audio with the video on the MPEG2s – once the MPEG2 file is complete, can it ‘grow in size’ when you import it into another piece of software? I’ll give it a go.

Encore is trying to transcode the audio to make it DVD-legal. However, it also re-transcodes the video when it does this.
So do try stripping it to elementary streams and let us know what happens.

You said you had many menus? How many and are they motion menus? Whats the total length of them?

From the main menu there are six submenus, and three of these have a further submenu, or ‘continuing menu’. So 10 altogether.
