Just a request for an MXF file conversion
Hey all,
I never work with MXF files, but for a recent video project I rented a camera for some slow motion shots, and it gave me MXF files.
I spent last night trying to figure out the conversion process (they import into Sony Vegas but are choppy), and it seems I have to buy software. I couldn’t find a free alternative either. But as I don’t plan on using the MXF in the future (at least not on my current machine), I just thought I’d ask here if someone felt obliged to help me convert them.
I’m kind of asking for a one sided request as I’m not sure what I could give in return,..

did you match project settings to the mxf files?
what camera generated them?

It was a Sony PXW-FS5.
Yes I matched the project settings, but the problem continued. The video is choppy, also upon export.

are they 4k?
what’s your editing system specs?
you could always work with proxies if it isn’t umphy enough.

4K, hmm, could be, I’m not sure and I’m new to the recent cameras. I’ve been working with a 4 year old camera up until now.
I’ve got a laptop- i7-4710 2.50GHz
16 GB
64-bit OSOnce I convert the files into .MOV or .MPG with one of the free programs (which leave a big watermark in the video), it works fine. But I’ve found many people have problems importing the MXF files into Vegas and the best way is to convert. But again, I only have a few shots and I already returned the camera, so I’d prefer not so spend money on software if someone could help a brother out.

put a clip [and the sidecar xml file if there is one] in Dropbox somewhere and I will have a look at it.Just fyi -Mxf is a pro container format and is well supported by Vegas and other leading editors.
Particularly after the addition of the generic container you can put almost anything in there (even RAW).The problems you are having are more likely to be due to the contained media format. What does it say in the project properties?

What would you like to know about what it says in the project settings? Also, I tried opening up a new project and matching the project to the MXF file I import, but I have the same problem.

Hi Derek,
you posted one of the .mpg files. The tools I have think that contains just over a minute of silence! No video at all. A minute of video ought to be much bigger than that file was.Do you still have the original .Mxf file?
I’m trying to devise a workflow that allows those files to be handled.

Hi Derek,
alas that link is another .xml file.
I need the 1gb .Mxf file. It is probably named something like clip0002.mxfDropbox allows you to share a file or a folder. A folder would be better as long as you have nothing in there you wish to keep private.
1GB is no problem.
