  Pen tool will not create curved path

  Hey everyone…this is a weird problem that recently popped up. When I try to create a curved mask for text using the pen tool, I simply cannot make it curve. I am very familiar with the usual method of using the main pen tool, clicking down and simultaneously dragging to create a curve point; I am also very familiar with using the convert vertex tool to change a corner point to a curve point. I have done both hundreds if not thousands of times.
  But…
  Lately it seems like I cannot make this happen. If I click and drag it never drops the point and then curves it, it simply moves the location of where the point will end up when I release the button. Fine, I’ll just convert it with the vertex tool: no dice, nothing happens when I do this either.
  I cannot find any relevant preference or figure out why this is happening. I have no problem doing the exact same thing in Illustrator. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  I’m guessing that you may have switched on the rotobezier tool.
