    Hi,

I’m about to do a corporate video with an EX1 which I’ve only used once before. I edit solely on a Mac Desktop but will be filming in remote locations so I’ll need to hire a Laptop to offload the SD card and back up.
To keep costs down I’d like to hire a PC laptop (not a Mac), download XDCAM Transfer and process the footage in the field this way.

    My question then is this:
Does the Windows version of XDCAM Transfer turn the MXF files into the same codec? (XDCAM HD 1080i50 is what I need) that I can then use in FCP?
    Thanks.
    Peter

…I’ve just thought some more about this. Perhaps the following is the best:
Simply drag the BPAV folder onto my Windows machine then transfer it all to Mac when I return, THEN use XDCAM Transfer on my Mac to transcode all the footage. Does that sound right?

There is no Windows XDCAM Transfer.
ClipBrowser is cross platform. As long as you just copy BPAV folder (with CRC ON) the files can be rewrapped in XDCAM Transfer which is Mac only.

I’d suggest you have enough cards that you do not have to copy cards during the shoot. Copy at end of the day when you’re not in a rush to copy and wipe cards.

[Craig Seeman] “There is no Windows XDCAM Transfer.”
    So how they do it?

    Thanks Craig,

I don’t know what CRC is?
At what point do I turn it on?
Although I’m assuming that will be obvious when I get my hands on the gear….

ClipBrowser wraps BPAV/MP4 to MXF for NLE.

[Peter Humble] “I don’t know what CRC is?”

CRC checks integrity of the copy by doing a data parity check.
Enable it in preferences. Keep it on all the time.

    Peter,

I use a PC to backup in the field. I’ve been doing it for a couple of years now and it works fine. As others have said, make sure “data protection” and “CRC check” are selected.

Clip browser gives each backup a new unique name (based on date and time). After they back up a card, I have my assistant REMOVE the card from the PC, and THEN select the newly backed up folder to make sure the footage is actually there.

Knock on wood, 3 years and haven’t lost any footage.

    Good luck,

    David

    Hi,

I’ve found the PC route goes quickly, however, I’m hearing a lot of positive things about the Nexto NVS2500 which allows you to download the cards onto a small portable hard drive. This would be perfect for remote field work .

    Cheers,

    Jim

    Peter,

Shoot some footage and upload and make sure you know what you are doing before you start. Read the directions for XDCam Transfer and Clip Browser and try them out before to make sure your workflow is what you want it to be. It is not unintuitive but if you have never done it before I would try it first.

How much more is a Mac laptop than a PC laptop? If you are more comfortable with Mac I would spend the extra money.
