problem transferring files to passport drive
have new 500gig passport drive, when i try and drag video files to it it says there is not enough space and to do a disc cleanup. obviously theres plenty of space, 500gig!!
file is 16gig.
you dont format these drives, so whats the problem
trying to transfer mxf files and mov files -

There may be plenty of space but the disc formatting may be incompatible with your computer. If you’re on a windows machine make sure your Passport is formatted in NTFS; if you have a Mac then the formatting should be Mac OS Extended. Don’t assume a new hard drive is already formatted with something you can use immediately. Always reformat a new drive before use.

Most off the shelf drives are formatted using FAT32. FAT32 is compatible with both Mac’s and PC’s and that’s why it is used. FAT32 is also used by SxS cards. However FAT32 has a maximum file size of 4Gb so you cannot write a file larger than 4Gb to a drive or card formatted this way. The EX cameras (and others) work around this by breaking long clips into 4Gb chunks. So if you want to export a 16Gb clip to a FAT32 drive or card then you need to either break it up into 4Gb chunks or re-format the drive using (as Don said) using NTFS for a PC or Mac Extended for a Mac. Of course the only problem now is that it will be harder for PC users to read the drive it it’s Mac formatted and vice versa. There are software apps that will allow you to read NTFS on a Mac and Mac on a PC, but these are not standard issue on any computer.
