    When I import some video, the video takes a long time to import, and when it finally does come in, I get the following error message:

    After Effects error: retrieving frame from video stream. (3)

    (53 :: 34)

    The video is then unusable (all black).

    This doesn’t happen for all the footage I have. Footage I recently captured into Premiere Pro 1.5 from a DV deck seems to work fine. However, older footage I have, captured in Vegas (but also from the same DV deck), does give me this error.

    The only difference is a change in video cards (now using Storm RT 2). However, should the difference in video cards effect how After Effects imports video?

    Any help is appreciated.

    If your older card used a proprietary codec that only that card could read, then yes it could effect it.

    Often, higher end video cards have hardware that allow it to compress video in a lossless format that only that card can read. The idea is, you take it into your NLE and output it in a format that others can see, but in the interim (while on your machine) it saves space and increases performance.

    Check the company’s website to see if they have a software decoder for that codec.

    This may, of course not be the problem. If you can see these files in premiere or a another program that canb convert video, then convert them into a lossless format like QT animation compression before going into AE.
