  • Matching EX1 and HVX200

    I have a 2 camera shoot coming up… shooting in a controlled studio

    Problem is… I have a HVX200 and Sony EX1

    I have no idea how to make both these cameras colors look the same..

    When I do tests, the Sony looks washed out in color compared to the HVX200.

    I am new to this stuff… Does anyone have a step by step guide to doing this?

    I have Final Cut 6.03 and a SD semi pro monitor, but nothing that lets me do split screen comparisons…

    I’d get them as close as possible with the monitor, waveform and vector scopes and then further finesse in post. But you have to be realistic, these camera will never shoot a similar looking picture that they’d be 100% interchangeable, to say nothing of media/resolution inconsistency. If it’s truly important that everything match 1:1, you need to rent either a second EX1 or HVX200 and shoot two of the same camera.

    You can use the vectorscopes in FCP to get your colours and exposures close between the 2 cameras. There are also broadcast monitors you could rent that have built-in waveform monitors and vectorscopes. Connect the two cameras to the monitor and adjust the cameras until they read the same. The Panasonic BT-LH1760 is one such monitor. I believe it also has a split screen function.

    Even if you don’t end up renting a reference monitor such as the Panny if you go to the link above you’ll have a better idea of what’s available for you on set.

    If you want the EX1 to look less washed out then you
    will need to adjust your picture profile.

    Hi Joseph;
    Please find below the PP of the EX-1 matching the HVX200 PPs.
    I’ve picked them from DVinfo and the guy who post them (Andy Shipside. Thanks Andy) is a camera specialist from AbelCine Tech.
    I haven’t tried them because i don’t work with the P2, but is good to have them in case:

    Here are print outs of my settings. All the other settings are set to default. I noted that the detail adjustment is subjective because I just eyeballed the difference. The EX1 is notably sharper even at the lowest level.
