Dear friends,
I have to transfer to video some 16 and 35mm film.
The nearest Telecine facility may be some three thousand miles away, and even being closer, no budget. So I have to shoot the screen with my EX-1.
I’ve never done that before and i have many questions: Where to set the camera, speed, shutter, Picture Profile (?), etc.
Any kind of tip about what to do and what not to do would be highly appreciated.
I can not shoot from the back of the screen.

A few years ago I had to use some Super8 film footage on a no budget project.
I just set up the Projector and camera next to each other and used a non reflective matte board to project on. A projection screen was too reflective and produced a hot spot.
This was back i the Betacam days so I only had 60i. I was surprised at how well it came out, a little flickery but no worse than the projection.
Today I would set up the same projector cam setup and test a bunch of frame rates and shutter speeds, while viewing SDI out on a reference monitor. Most projectors drift a little so you may have to try a few takes of each scene.

Thanks for your advice.I want to record from the HDI/SDI out through the AJA to HD. I guess that I can get a good picture but what concerns me the most is the speed. I will try p25 and p23,98.

I did several reels of standard 16mm with a Canon H1 utilizing 24f @ shutter of 48.
Used firewire and “capture now” in FCP.Results were actually pretty awesome.
Try to avoid hot spots on the projector screen and shoot it pretty flat
with one of the cinema picture profiles.Will Griffith

Thanks very much for your advice.
I guess the best place to set the camera is right underneath the projector so there are less picture distortion.
i guess too that the FC Videoscope can be of help to control the light levels.
Well, a new experience is always interesting and hopefully i will have time to make some tests before recording.
