  Rick Gerard’s tip on Slow Motion in AE – need clarification

  Here’s an easy trick to get very good slow-mo from AE by doubling the frame rate and separating fields.

  That’s all there is to it. Separate fields, check motion detect and then change the comp settings to 59.94 fps for NTSC or 50 fps for PAL. Render and you have twice as many frames as you had originally. Nice, smooth, artifact free slow-mo that you can then time stretch, introduce frame blending to and render to end up with 4 times the number of original frames. This is a very good trick that does not require any 3rd party plug-ins.

  OK, So this is from 2002.
  Some questions rise:
  Should the rendered movie be at 50FPS or 25FPS (PAL) ?
  Should I Separate Fields in the Final Render ?( Lower First).
  Does frame blending help here ?

  If you can tape in 50 FPS, then you’re slo-mo is done for you. Just interperet that footage at 25 or 29.97 FPS.

  I think you may mean 50i, in which case, yes, you want to film interlaced.

  For me, all I have to do is a time stretch of 200% on the interlaced footage and After Effects is smart enough to siply pull from each field to build the full frames. Frame blending is unnecessary.

  Once you’ve done that, you should have progressive frames at the framerate you want, and any field business you do after that is up to you and whatever you need for your final output.
