I’m making a directory with InDesign. Every listing must be exactly two lines. I want to scale characters and spaces down horizontally so that larger amounts of text still fit.

I figured out how to do this if the paragraph is justified, but about half of the paragraphs have only two or three words. I would like short lines to be left aligned, not justified.

Best I’ve thought of so far is have the program that exports the data into tagged text count the number of characters in a line, and set the paragraph style accordingly. If there is an easier solution I would love to hear about it.

    Thanks,
    ls.
