  • Are Blackmagic AVI files a good choice for file based back-ups?

    Hi everyone,

We’re cleaning up a number of old projects at our facility, firstly backing up the final edits to tape and then having a second back-up of the edit as a video file on a number of external drives.

As we work with Blackmagic Capture Cards in Premiere CS5 on Windows 7, our first thought is to export our final edits (Both SD and HD) using Blackmagic AVI files.

Is this the best option? As Premiere does not work with these files unless the Blackmagic Drivers are installed. Is that a chance that future software a few years down the track won’t be compatible with those AVI files?

Would Blackmagic AVIs be a good choice for what we are wanting to do?

I understand that future proofing back-ups indefinitely is pretty much impossible, I’m just curious to know what other people are doing.

I’ve been making my digital backup as jpeg2000 quicktimes. Simply because its more of a universal thing, and is still accepted by theatres up here as a delivery option.

That’s kind of what I was thinking.
