Question about Intensity Shuttle USB 3.0 and MPEG-2
Can this device capture to MPEG-2?
I’m currently using an HDMI capture card in my desktop PC that captures uncompressed MPEG-2 files. They are very convenient for my fast-paced editing requirements.
I’m trying to replicate my desktop setup with a laptop, and looking at the Intensity Shuttle as a solution.

There is no such thing as uncompressed MPEG-2, as MPEG-2 is a lossy codec.
But to answer your question, you can’t capture via MPEG-2 with either the Media Express software or Premiere Pro.
There may be other software that can use the Shuttle and compress in real-time to MPEG2, but none that I know of.

Hmmm…well my main reason for asking is because MPEG-2 is very fast in my editing program. I can scrub around on the timeline without any delay, and find specific points in seconds. So fast, I guess, that I always thought it was uncompressed.
Are there other formats the device captures in that will be just as quick?

Both DV (or HDV) and MJPEG are fast, as well as uncompressed (as long as your hard drives can keep up). The Shuttle can capture in all three of those formats.

Oh, so these are just AVI files! Great. I was worried the device wouldn’t capture to a format I could process easily with virtualdubmod. (Yes I know it’s old, but it’s useful in my job).
One last question: do you know if laptop support has improved for this device? I see a lot of people using it with laptops on youtube. I was going to order a really top of the line i7 Sager laptop, NP9170, but unsure if this would work with it.

I primarily use a laptop, and used one to capture those files. Mine is a Asus G53SW, i7 Quad, 16GB Ram, GTX460M with 1.5GB VRam. It has absolutely no problems with the files.
Please note, the only real problems with laptops (and desktops) is what type of USB 3.0 controller it uses. There have been a LOT of incompatibilities with the Shuttle. So make sure to search this forum to find a laptop that is known to work with it.

I also have a Blackmagic intensity shuttle (USB3) and I am digitizing some VHS Tapes with it.
The problem is that it only let me capture in uncompress. And even if it is in SD, I end up with files at 1GB per min…
How do you get the option to record in Mjpeg or DVC PRO 50?
Would really appreciate your help.

Which software are you using? I believe Media Express should allow you to choose both DV50 and MJPEG, as well as uncompressed.
