I am trying to set up Blackmagic UltraStudio 3D with FCP X via Thunderbolt on an iMac running Lion. My main use for UltraStudio is output via SDI to a monitor. I downloaded the 9.2 Beta Desktop Installer and have the same setting in FCP X preferences as are in BMD system settings. The output video plays from the FCP X timeline for about 1sec. and then appears to go into slow motion on the monitor (not on the timeline). This happens with the Y/C and Composite outputs on the breakout cable also. Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong? Also, the UltraStudio 3D box gets EXTREMELY HOT while in use. The fan settings under Processing are grayed out and not adjustable.

You’re lucky. I can’t even get it to play anything, anytime. And yes, you’re right. It gets extremely hot.

Haven’t had a chance to follow up with this yet but here is what I got from Blackmagic Tech Support:

Concerning the heat issue, do you know if the fan on the underside of the
unit is functioning? It should only get really hot if this fan is not
    working.

As far as the output slowing down, what resolution, frame rate and codec is
the clip you are trying to output?

If it is uncompressed HD and you do not have a RAID or fast SSD, it could be
a dropped frame issue which would result in the drive or RAID not having
sufficient r/w speed to play back the video properly.

If it is compressed with something like H.264, this will need to be
transcoded first to something like ProRes before this will play back
    properly.

Update: The fan was definitely not working as well as some playback problems. Tech Support had me return the unit and while it was there Apple came out with a software update for FCP X related to playback on broadcast monitors.
BlackMagic ended up sending me a new UltraStudio 3D. It just arrived and the fan is working and video is playing back properly. The case is still pretty warm but after reading some reviews on line this appears to be the norm.
