  Editing with red

  HI.

  Now that i have edited my first commercial with RED camera footage and Multibridge Pro i can say that the workflow is fast as hell :).
  compared to actual film work flow we used to have.

  I have 8 cored Mac Pro as edit station with Finalcut Studio 2.

  Amazing part is that i can copy all my material to array from camera drive and start editing right away. No rendering no nothing.

  Here are some details:

  1. copy to array
  2. import proxys to FCP (SD, HD, 2k)
  3. edit
  4. export EDL from fcp to Monkey Extract
  5. convert proxys to DPX or hi rez mov
  6. color correct with color
  7. output final results from FCP

  and voila

  In FCP i had orange line on top of the timeline
  but for offline it was good enough and played back in real time with perfect audio sync. From color to TV set image was a bit brighther than FCP timeline and i had to output color result as a bit brighther version in the end but that is probably my color configuration issue or something similar.

  What i’m really looking forward is full support form BM so that my FCP could play out eny size of proxy up to 2K without orange line on top of timeline. As the orange bar appears the video is a bit soft when playing. When playhead is stopped still frame is clear but when you start edit it goes soft again ab bit. As it is offline we are talking about this is ok at first, later on i wish it would be perfectly sharp as on MOV proxy files directly.

  I will see tons of editing coming in with RED material from now.

  Hope BM will support us soon on that side.

  I see no going back and away from RED now 🙂

  this is a great post. May I suggest (and urge you) to contact Creative Cow, and write a detailed article on your experience with RED workflow – using the same outline of what you said in this post, but with more detail. This would be a GREAT article. Thanks for posting here.

  Hi Bob,

  I will do some more testing and refining.

  Today i have other project at hand and i’m going to color correct with DPX. Lets see what that goes to.

  Still not to long render times 🙂

  I figured if time line some times auto renders itself on idle time
  picture gets really clean and no softness eny more.

  I let auto render final edit as for offline it is huge timesaver not to render.

  Lets see what Moo people say about writing a line or two.
